Greed: The Avaricious Sin
Enter stranger but take heed. Of what awaits the sin of greed, for those who take, but do not earn, must pay most dearly in their turn.
If pride is the root of all sin, greed is the sun-kissed fruit. Greed feeds on immediate gratification. Right here, right now. Greed is inordinate love of material things and an unbalanced desire for more earthly possessions. A greedy person cherishes things more than he cherishes people or relationships. “It’s never enough, I gotta have more” is the motto of the ugly sin called greed. Like its sister sin, gluttony, greed is a drive to consume for the sheer pleasure of consuming without regard to moderation.
Greed, the lust for material gain is one of the iniquities that most incurs God's scornful wrath. Greed is "the root of all evils" the desire for material gain. It is similar to Gluttony and Envy, but gain rather than consumption or possession is key. Greed gets in your face. Greed says, “Gimme—now.” Greed is a clever manipulator who trades in vice and corruption. Passionate and plotting, he was by far the most charismatic and seductive of the Sins. He loved vice in all its forms, but the truest gratification he derived was that from the failure of others. He was a master of temptation, of causing those who held steadfastly to principles and beliefs to ultimately betray them. He existed only to shred morality, to bring and and all within his sphere of pleasure to the point of breaking, believing that all beings find their truest identity by embracing the far limits of perversion and depravity.
Greed is host to the most depraved of souls who have abandoned everything but their desire for material things. Never satisfied with what they find, they tirelessly dig only to lose more of themselves with every bauble they unearth. When any prospector accumulates enough wealth to draw attention, a brief but intense struggle ensues, the result of which is an ever-expanding treasure trove sure to attract still more thieves.
But when does the desire to simply possess something turn into unchecked greed? When the things that you possess start possessing you. Greed will always leave you dissatisfied because you'll never be able to get everything you desire. Greed never allows you to think you have enough; it always destroys you by making you strive ever harder for more. Greed, like the love of comfort, is a kind of fear. Greed is a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction.
